Shotts Golf Club was formed on the initiative of the reverend R.W. Rutherford, S.P.R Deas and a few

other notable gentlemen of the town. A meeting was arranged in the public hall, Shotts, on Friday 13th December 1895, with a view to form a golf club.

A lease was produced for a piece of land situated on the farms of Cairneyhead and Springhill, adjacent to where the present Torbothie cemetery now stands.

The original course served the members well until the close of the 1904 season. By this time an alternative piece of land had been made available by the Parish council, situated on the south side of the railway, near the station. With the assistance of golf course designer Mr Tulloch of Glasgow Gails Golf Club a new nine-hole golf course was laid out.

Then in early 1922 negotiations for a piece of land at Blairhead were successfully completed and the original eighteen holes were laid out by golf professional and course designer Mr David Adams. In November 1936 James Braid, the noted golf course architect was appointed to draw up a plan with the view to improving the original Blairhead layout, his fee was ten guineas. Alterations were made up until 1949 following Braid's plan. A new 16th green in the autumn of 1964 and further improvements to the 6th and 13th greens and regular tree planting, only add more character to this great course we know today.
